oh, what a Knight

Gladys Knight has always been one of my favorite singers, and last night I had the honor of seeing her perform with the Birmingham Symphony. She did not disappoint! Her rich, throaty, visceral voice is still in unbelievable shape. She sounded exactly the same as she did 20 or 30 years ago - even until the shows end! I was amazed. "How is it possible?" I asked myself. I can just make it through a show myself! I believe she's actually better. Yes, I said it. The way she interprets songs now comes from a wiser, more mature place. She sings with even more emotion than before without ever being showy or over-blown. And THAT is saying alot. There were no gimmicks to distract - no acrobats swinging down from the concert hall ceiling, no half-naked dancers, no pyrotechnics. There was no light show, unless you include a Gobo light that made a pretty design on the back wall. There wasn't even a follow spot! She slayed us with nothing but her voice and personality.

Gladys had us on our feet the moment she walked out onto the stage. She had cat callers, name screamers, and in a quiet moment a request from the upper tier balcony for "Love Overboard", which she replied, "Are you too much in love, girl? I do that, too!" She promised she would add it to the show, and, she "always keeps a promise." Symphony Hall surely has never held so much unbridled joy - and open chatting with the star on stage!

I would have to guess that she's in her early 60's, having been in the business since, well, the early 1960's. Gladys may have sang these songs and spoken the lines five thousand times, but the songs were familiar friends and the lines felt new to us. She was relaxed, personable, and sincere. She said she was glad to be back in the south with us after all these years away. Who else could possibly understand how she grew up and where she came from? I felt a mysterious sense of pride having also grown up Georgia. It sounds silly to me now as I write it.

Of course she (with our help) performed "Midnight Train To Georgia", and it was fun, but the highlight of the evening was her performance of "Neither One of Us." She brought down the house. Upon the last beautiful long held note, everyone stood and screamed. The applause was deafening. We cried, she cried and was as gracious and humble as any performer i've ever seen. Through the tears (and laughter) this fellow Georgia girl secretly hoped that when I grow up, I want to be one-tenth as gracious, resilient and compelling as Gladys Knight.

on being a small business owner

As you probably already know, Trish and I opened an event facility,  banquet hall, a large beautiful place to rent for your wedding, reception, party, corporate meeting, etc...called The Magnolia Room, and i am loving it! I love helping make people happy and knowing that we've done everything we can to assist in making a few dreams come true. It's almost as satisfying as performing, but the commute is about 4-6 hours shorter...at least.

I'm learning alot of new things, too, things that I could've never learned in music....like how to get the city to grant your building or liquor license faster, for example. Needless to say, it (it being Trish) has really helped me hone my people skills. It's also made me, Michelle Malone,  a more patient and considerate person. And those of you who have known me a few decades are "amazed" with my transformation. Whatev!

This new venture has taken some of the stresses of touring and being a full time musician off me...and it has also added entirely new stresses! I know what it feels like to be at the center of the event hurricane, having been an entertainer (ie, center of the universe) in the music biz for over 25 years. NOW I know what it's like to perform all the behind the scenes tasks and gracefully get the event off without a hitch, to the best of my ability. It aint always easy, but the show must go on! Since we opened in October 2010, the beer cooler, refrigerator, heater, plumbing and electricity have all needed repairing! ARG!! Of course these things only break when we are in the midst of a big event like a wedding party of 250...seriously?!!

Unfortunately, the building was not for sale, so we have a "land lord"...btw, i think they should rename them something a bit more appropriate instead of "lord"... i could think of a few, but i won't print them here. I actually really like our land man, but that doesnt change the fact that the building needs more love than he's willing to give it...and I suppose that's his job...to save a buck. No matter. Trish and I will make it work, as we always do, because we are consummate professionals, entertainers, actresses, if you will, and we will fake it til we make, and you will never see us sweat...because the heater is broken? NO! Because we wear Secret anti-persperant? NO! Because we are grateful, we care and we want to make sure that YOU have the BEST experience possible! The times, they are a changing...and I couldnt be happier! I should've tried another business sooner...or at least gotten a part time job....

which reminds me very little of the time I worked for a big Buckhead law firm...for 3 weeks...that first time I got kicked out of college...

Kindle vs. Nook vs. iPad: Which e-book reader should you buy?

While we're on the subject....here is a repost of an article from CNET:

Kindle vs. Nook vs. iPad: Which e-book reader should you buy?

Editors' note, November 26: This story has been updated since its original publication to reflect the latest Kindle, Nook, and Sony models, and to address reader comments.

Yes, it's true: now is a better time than ever to be in the market for an e-book reader. Hardware prices are more affordable, and more titles are available electronically--anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions, depending on whether you include the huge library of free public-domain titles--than at any point in history.

The market has consolidated around a handful of major players: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and Apple. Recently updated products from the first three include excellent options in the sub-$250 (and even sub-$150) price ranges. Also, a flood of new reading-centric apps continues to solidify the Apple iPad's position as the premium media tablet of choice--even as a likely wave of competing Android tablets appears on the horizon.

With these new variables, now is a perfect time to re-evaluate the e-book reader landscape and figure out which product is best for you. If you're an experienced shopper, you can jump straight to our current recommendations--or check our lists of top e-book readers and top tablets. If you're looking for a more in-depth discussion, read on to consult this quick guide, which boils the purchase decision down to eight questions:

Things my mom taught me...er, forwarded me....

Does your mom email you forwards just about everyday? Mine does. Sometimes they are fun pet videos, but they are usually about health...Like how to tell when you're having a heart attack, how to avoid a stroke, why to avoid certain foods...it basically become a long list of do's and dont's...and if I read them, i get all paranoid like one of us is gonna stroke out, or how if i eat one more strip of bacon, i'll clog an artery...and if i dont open it these emails and read them...if i delete it without reading...i'll have so much guilt that i'm afraid the guilt will give me cancer....unless i put an aspirin under my tongue...or take some B12. Well, it's always all good and helpful info, no matter how paranoid or guilty it makes me...proof positive is in the following bit of info...read it and weep...and call your mom.

Drinking water at the correct time maximizes its effectiveness on the Human body:
2 glasses of water after waking up helps activate internal organs.
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal helps digestion.
1 glass of water before taking a bath helps lower blood pressure.
1 glass of water before going to bed avoids stroke or heart attack.

Thanks mom! I'm going to have some water...in about an hour...
